“Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Treasure Island,” the 38th feature installment in the Doraemon anime franchise about a blue robot cat from the future and his boy companion, topped the Japanese box office for the March 3-4 weekend.
With Toho releasing on 381 screens, the film earned $8 million on 717,000 admissions in its opening frame. This was 22% better than the first weekend of the previous entry, “Doraemon the Movie 2017: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi,” which went on to set a series record with $42 million last year.
Disney’s “Black Panther” opened second. The film made $2.9 million on 199,000 admissions on Saturday and Sunday. Over four days it lifted that to $4.76 million, putting it on course for a total in excess of $15 million.
Warner’s Clint Eastwood thriller “The 15:17 to Paris” opened in fifth. Opening on March 1, the film took $1.13 million in its first weekend and $1.91 million over four days.
Gen Hoshino released a video for his 11th solo single, 'Doraemon,' that combines the official music video and a teaser promoting the DVD included in the single's limited first-edition package.
The music video features four dancers from Elevenplay, an all-female Japanese dance company led by the dancer/choreographer MIKIKO, who has worked closely with such artists as Perfume and BABYMETAL.
Hoshino planned the video that focuses on the quirky choreography by the dancers as they prance through the set inspired by familiar places in Doraemon comics and anime such as Nobita's room and the vacant lot.
The singer-songwriter and actor explains in the trailer that the DVD will contain a comedy segment featuring 'Nise Akira,' a character familiar to fans who have attended his shows, and concert footage of rare acoustic renditions of some of his hits, including Billboard Japan's No. 1 song of 2017, 'Koi.'

The 38th and latest instalment in the long-running series of Doraemon movies, Nobita's Treasure Island follows Nobita and friends on a seafaring adventure to find lost treasure on a mysterious island which has just appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the Pacific.
Imai Kazuaki, who has previously directed many episodes of the TV anime, will be making his big screen directorial debut while Kawamura Genki, the producer behind The Boy and the Beast and Your Name, will handle the script.
In addition to the regular cast from the TV anime, the movie will also feature a number of high profile guest stars including TV personality and actor Oizumi You.
The new theme song will receive its first full playthrough on Jan. 16 as part of Hoshino Gen’s radio talk show, All Night Nippon, and will also be released as a CD single on Feb. 28. Hoshino is also to provide another insert song for the movie.

Nobita’s Treasure Island is the 38th movie in this series. It is set in a dreamy and romantic ocean; an adventure unfolds over a treasure hidden on a mysterious island that suddenly appeared in the Pacific Ocean. Some of the TV anime’s cast is back, Kazuaki Imai is directing for the first time, Genki Kawamura (producer of Bakemono no Ko, Kimi no Na wa. and other movies) is in charge of the screenplay. The guest voice actor is Yo Oizumi.

In keeping with the “Treasure Island” theme, the movie will star comedian Oizumi You as “Captain Silver” in a tale of pirate themed adventure with Nobita and friends.
In a series first, singer-songwriter Hoshino Gen will sing the main title theme and also have another song featured within the movie.
While the title of the main theme has not yet been revealed, it has been announced that Hoshino's “Koko ni Inai Anata e” will be included in the movie’s soundtrack.
Some of the heartwarming ballad can be heard in the 30 second teaser trailer, which has been released in advance of a 90 second trailer to be launched in the Dec. 1 episode of the Doraemon TV anime.
